My Modern Afro-centric House Tour

My husband and I recently purchased and moved into a brand new home. We aren’t necessarily first-time home-buyers*, but this house is what I call my ‘young adult dream home’.  Some of the criteria that were really important to me in finding this new home were:

  • Open space, plenty of windows
  • Wood floors, especially in the living room and master bedroom
  • Walk-in closet
  • MODERN VIBES!
  • Close to work

The new home we got literally checked all those boxes and we were super excited!

Quick backstory– We bought our first home back in 2015 when we got married.  At the time, Ibk(my husband) worked about an hour and a half east of Houston while I was working in downtown Houston. Because of that, we decided to live in a small town 30 mins east of Houston to shorten his commute a bit. The plan was always to move into the city whenever he was able to transfer to a closer location. He recently moved jobs and locations and so we had the perfect opportunity to move.  Also, *SIDE NOTE* Ibk is a real estate agent/investor in case you are wondering or thinking about buying a house. As of now, we have about 7 properties in total(we bought five solely as investment properties), he is a GURU in this whole process…trying to convince him to start a class or do a webinar because he is so knowledgeable and passionate about real estate and financial literacy.

We wanted to fill our space with things that really represented us and made us feel at home. That being said, we went for what I call a modern afro-centric style filled with various African pieces- African masks, paintings, pillowcases, sculptures etc. We picked up most of our African pieces from Lagos during our trip last year, and our mud cloth pillows are from Ruffledthread (obsessed)!

Check out how we put some of the major things together in this video below:

It’s been over a year since we moved into our home at this point. It took us about 6-7months to get everything set up/decorated to where it is now. We are really proud of how everything came together in the end. It’s interesting how having a space you put a lot of effort and care into makes you really enjoy being at home/actually want to stay in more lol. Till today, I still look around and truly feel like we created such a beautiful space for our family.

What are my favorite things about our house you ask?

I looooooove our accent wall in the living room, our dining area(which I may do an entire post soley on that) and our balcony with the downtown houston view (it was awesome for july 4th fireworks)
